UPC/GTIN

I have a customer who is asking me to change the UPC on an item. They said "The system formats UPCs to be entered as above. Even though the UPC image is 029714240083, the system needs it entered as 002971424008 (i.e. omit the last digit and add a zero at the beginning)." The GTIN-14 is 00029714240083.

I thought changing the GTIN at point of sale to a GTIN_12 and putting in 002971424007 would work, but I am getting an error. GTIN for Point of Sale (gs1TradeItemIdentificationKey/value) must be a valid 12 digits when GTIN for Point of Sale Type Code is set to "GTIN_12".

Why is this not valid and does this sound like the correct thing to do?

Hi Jezebel. The only marking in Item Management for UPC is the Data Carrier Type Code, but that is just noting what type of barcode is on the packaging. And on this GTIN you have that listed as UPCA saying that it is a basic UPC on the package. Then as you have stated and have on the item the GTIN for Point of Sale on the each listed as a GTIN_12 would be the UPC on the item.

Hello @Jezebel and welcome back to the customer community.  Thank you for checking again.  It is unusual that you are asked to change your UPC unless it is not based on your own prefix.  For my response, I am assuming you already looked into the "why."

Your UPC is based on your company prefix and there are standards around how to use the prefix to create UPCs, GTINs, GLNs, etc.  Be careful as dropping one end and adding could increase your risk of accidentally not using your prefix and using someone else's.

My best advice would be to take a look at the GS1 GTIN Management rules at https://www.gs1.org/gtinrules/. This will walk you though GPC creation based on your prefix. You can also Google "Check Digit Calculator" to help you generate the new check digit for any new items you create.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

I would like to delve into this if you are into it. I do understand the basic GTIN rules, that is why I know this request is not doable as they ask it, but is there a way to deliver a unique UPC to a specific recipient?

The why is because their system wants to import the number in a specific way/ format that is different than the actual UPC.

The publication is registered with a GTIN_14.  I never even enter a UPC. So where in a publication would I put a UPC? Is there an attribute that specifies the UPC on an each?

OK, I think i understand now. I was using the GTIN_14 as the GTIN at point of sale, on retail units, even though the barcode on the pkg was a UPCA, this has never caused a problem until now. The recipient was asking me to change the upc to a random number which was confusing. I did get confirmation that the one I changed to a GTIN_12 yesterday has been accepted on their side, so SUCCCESS!! the rest should be good by end of day. Thanks for the discussion 🙂

@Jezebel That is great to hear! Please don't hesitate to let us know if you need help with anything else and we would be more than happy to help.
