Has Display Ready Packaging? vs. Is Trade Item A Display Unit?

Can anyone offer guidance on when a product should be designated as a display unit versus having display ready packaging?

Based on the below definitions from the Participant Dictionary, it seems like all display units would have display ready packaging, but not all trade items with display ready packaging would be display units; from a CPG-perspective, trade units like end-aisle displays (EADs) come to mind.

Any examples or recommendations you have for use would be much appreciated!

Has Display Ready Packaging- "Indicates that the Trade Item has Display Ready Packaging (also referred to as Shelf Ready Packaging or Retail Ready Packaging). Display Ready Packaging can be exhibited on the floor, a shelf or other location. It may or may not require some modification e.g. to raise a flap. If modifications are necessary, the measurements would be advised for the trade item as prepared for display."

Trade Item A Display Unit- "An indicator whether or not a trade item is or could be used as a display unit. A display unit is intended to be shipped to a store without being split at a distribution centre or similar party and is intended to be displayed in a retail store either on a shelf or on the shop floor. ASSOCIATED BUSINESS RULES: A display unit is an orderable unit. A display unit has one or multiple child items that are consumer units and may be at any level in a trade item hierarchy except BASE_UNIT_OR_EACH."

Good morning and thank you for reaching out to us via our Community platform.  Yours is a good question and I can provide some guidance from the best practice perspective.  Display Ready Packaging examples could be something like a candy display or a chapstick display where the packaging is displayed on the floor or shelf.  The packaging could require some work on the recipient's end for setup.  The definition for a Display Unit is concise.

Please keep in mind that some recipients request certain packaging types.  As an example, Lowe's will not accept a Display level GTIN so it is a good idea to review the Implementation Guide for your trading partner you are trying to publish to via GDSN.  I hope this helps. Please let us know if you have additional questions.
