This article details how Data Layer hierarchy works and ways to clean up existing data that needs to be removed to push enabled mappings to their target attributes.

How Data Layers Work
When you publish product data to retailers, multiple sources can provide values for the same attribute. The hierarchy below determines which value "wins" and gets sent to the recipient. Values higher on the list take precedence over those below them.

The data is prioritized in the following order, from highest to lowest priority:
- Recipient Specific Manual Override
- An Override value you enter directly for a specific retailer.
- This has the highest priority. It takes precedence over ALL other values for that recipient.
- Recipient Specific Mapping
- A mapping you create for a specific retailer.
- This takes precedence over a universal mapping and verified data.
- Manually Entered Public Value
- A value you input directly into the product records.
- This takes precedence over all applied mappings to that target attribute.
- Syndigo Verified values will still take precedence over Public values.
- Applied Universal Mapping
- A mapping you create that applies to all recipients.
- This value will take precedence over verified data.
- Syndigo Verified Data
- This is your base level, trusted product data verified by Syndigo.
- Applied mappings will take precedence over this data.
Steps for Clearing Data for Mapped Values
If a target attribute already has an existing universal or recipient override applied, mapped data cannot be pushed to that attribute. You must clear the existing value first.
Below are the three ways to clear data.
Method 1: Single Edit Screen
- Go directly to a Product Details page
- Find the target attribute
- Delete the universal value and/or remove the applied override value

- Once the data is removed, the mapped data will automatically populate
- Save changes to confirm

Method 3: Spreadsheet Method
This method gives you more control over large batches.
Step 1: Export
- Go to the Products tab and select the affected products
- Click Export from the toolbar
- Choose your preferred delivery method
- Select the correct spreadsheet option:
- Clearing Universal Values (applied universal overrides or manually entered universal data) → Choose Attribute Spreadsheet – Typical Product Data Flow
- Clearing Recipient Specific Overrides → Choose Attribute Value Override Spreadsheet

- Select the requirement set that contains your target data
- If the affected target attribute is a category attribute, select Yes at the bottom so your export includes category attributes
- Review your spreadsheets and deselect anything you don't need
- Click Export
Step 2: Edit
- Open the spreadsheet
- Delete the target data values from the spreadsheet
- Save your changes

Step 3: Import

- Click Confirm and Import
This ensures the existing value is deleted from the system, giving the mapped data space to map successfully to your target attributes.

- Within the Activity Log tab, click the Product subtab under the Exports section
- Click the arrow under Actions on the right
- Retrieve your product export data
