Yes, that is a best practice. The GS1 site of course has way more details about GTIN creation but those are some helpful ways to get started.

Please let me know if this helps as this is what I would do:
EAN-13 8437012538016
Consumer Unit (Each) = 08437012538016
Non-consumer can be 18437012538013 - I got the "3" using the check digit calculator

Hello, and thanks for your good question. Technically, it is an EAN-13 and is scannable in store like a UPC. To create a consumer unit GTIN, you can add a leading zero. For packaging level GTINs, you will add a number between and including 1 and 8 in front of the EAN-13 but change the check digit. You can Google the Check Digit Calculator on the GS1 site for help there.

So if the UPC is 843701258016, for each it would be 0843701258016 and for case it would be 1843701258016 and I would delete the "6" at the end of the case number and put that into the check digit calculator?

I used in in the check digit calculator 1843701253801 (dropping the 6 at the end) and it says it is not the right number length for GS1 key. Do I omit the last 2 digits, the 1 and the 6?

The example you gave is a 12 digit UPC but you are asking about what to do with an EAN 13.
If your UPC is a UPC 12, using the example you provided, please see below:
UPC A (12 digits) 843701258016
Consumer Unit GTIN = 00843701258016
Non-Consumer GTIN (Packaging level) could start with any numbers between 1 and 8. I chose one for the example:
1084370125801? - Because you added a number other than zero, it changes the algorithm of the preceding numbers so you need to change teh check digit.
- Go to https://www.gs1.org/services/check-digit-calculator
- Enter 1084370125801 in the box as shown below and click "Calculate" to see your entire 14 digit number based on teh 12 digit UPC you provided me.

Sorry I missed a digit...UPC 8437012538016. That is 13 digits and when I add the 1 in front for case and take off the 6 at the end (check digit) and input into the Check digit calculator it says I have incorrect number length.
