Are UPCs/Barcodes required on variable weight items

We have several variable weighted items (catchweight) and wanted to know if the UPC# and/or barcodes need to be printed on the individual package.  They are sold in delis and so any quantities are weighted before selling.  They are also sold to foodservice customers.

Hello @hermiloh Thank you for using our community!

For variable weight (catchweight) items, sold at the deli and weighed at the time of sale, a pre-printed UPC on the individual package is typically not required, as the retailer generates the barcode label during weighing. However, if the items are pre-packed before arriving at the store, a UPC or GS1 DataBar is usually required.

For foodservice customers, barcodes are generally required at the case level rather than on each individual package. Therefore what we suggest is to confirm with your retailer how to proceed and the best practices.

Thank you!
