You can use Publish if the status of the GTIN is Never Published or Withdrawn for a recipient (this means no publication exists for the GTIN)
You can use Republish if the status of the GTIN is Published or Republished for a recipient (this means a publication does exist for the GTIN)
In almost all situations, to send updates to a recipient for an item that is currently "Published" to them, you can simply make the update in Sync/PDI and Save and Approve. The update will automatically be sent from the data pool to the recipient.
You only need to use Republish if
1) you are changing the publication type (e.g. from Initial load to New) - this is quicker/easier then doing a Withdraw, letting it process, and then Publishing again with the different type
2) a recipient has Rejected the item and you need to send it to them again (i.e. the recipient has asked you to send it again). Republish is the only way to override a Rejected status from a recipient.
3) if a recipient adds an additional item in their system for the same packaging hierarchy, you can republish to sync the additional item
4) (occasionally) a recipient has "lost" an item or deleted/removed an item from their system and they need you to send it again to them.
Using the Republish feature
Notes:
- The Republish feature is only available on the Publication Status screen for an individual item (that is, only one item at a time can be republished), versus Publish and Withdraw which are also available on the Search Results screen for use with multiple items. The reason for this is that Republish is very "powerful" -- it can override a rejected status from a recipient and send the item
- "Republish" is the only way a supplier can override a Rejected status from a recipient and have the item sent to the recipient again.
Confusion about the word "republish"
Sometimes a recipient will ask you to correct an item and "republish" it to them. This usually doesn't literally mean to use the Republish feature (see description above), but to simply send the item again to the recipient with the corrections.
At the 1WorldSync data pool, once a publication is in place, updates are automatically sent by the data pool to the recipient.
