Overview

Over time, you may find yourself needing to move previously collected content from one product to another. Common scenarios that require moving content include:

  • Switching to a new eCommerce platform where product identifiers are forced to change
  • Releasing a new version of a product and wanting to retain reviews that were previously collected
  • Reusing a product identifier that was previously used for an unrelated or discontinued product (before new reviews have been written)
  • Correcting reviews that were collected for an incorrect or invalid product identifier

Under PowerReviews, moving content like this is referred to as a Page ID migration, as content is moved based on the Page ID value of the product(s). PowerReviews provides a self-service Move Content tool in the PowerReviews Portal that you can use to move reviews (as well as Q&A and Social content) from one Page ID to another.

Keep in mind that any time a product identifier(s) you've previously provided to PowerReviews changes, any historically collected content will need to be moved. For more information on the product identifiers PowerReviews uses, see Page IDs and Page ID Variants

Considerations

Before you decide to migrate content, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Reviews can only belong to a single Page ID/Variant combination; a Page ID migration cannot copy content, only move it.
  • All content associated with that Page ID/Variant combination will be moved to the new identifier(s). You cannot choose certain content to move/not move, and you cannot split the content into multiple Page ID/Variant combinations.
  • This process only supports Page IDs and Variants that you have already provided to PowerReviews via your Product Data. If PowerReviews cannot locate the Page ID(s) in your catalog, the content cannot be moved.
  • This migration process cannot be undone once it's been completed. If a mistake is made in the migration file or process, a subsequent migration will need to be done.

Moving Your Content

You can move your content in two ways, depending on the number of products you're moving:

1. Manual Input - This is a good option if you only have a few products to move.
2. File Upload - This is a good option if you have a large list of products to move in bulk.

Manual Input

1. Log in to the PowerReviews Portal.
2. Click + Setup in the left-hand menu.
3. Under Move Content, click Manual Input.

4. Enter your current and new Page IDs and Page ID Variants into the text box accordingly:

  • current_page_id - the current product page_id that's tied to the existing content you want to move
  • current_variant - the current product page_id_variant
  • new_page_id - the new product page_id where the content will be moved to
  • new_variant - the new product page_id_variant

5. Verify the data you've entered is correct and click Move Content.

Note: If a Page ID Variant(s) is not being used, commas must still be included to delineate those empty fields.

Example: Current Page ID, Current Variant, New Page ID, New Variant

  • abc,123,xyz,456 (indicates moving from page id 'abc' and variant '123' to page id 'xyz' and variant '456')
  • abc,123,xyz, (indicates moving from page id 'abc' and variant '123' to page id 'xyz' and no new variant)
  • abc,,xyz,456 (indicates moving from page id 'abc' and no variant to page id 'xyz' and variant '456')
  • abc,,xyz, (indicates moving from page id 'abc' to page id 'xyz' - no variants at all)

File Upload

1. Log in to the PowerReviews Portal.
2. Click Setup in the left-hand menu.
3. Under Move Content, click File Upload.

4. Create a CSV or TXT file with the following columns from left to right:

  • current_page_id - the current product page_id that's tied to the existing content you want to move
  • current_variant - the current product page_id_variant
  • new_page_id - the new product page_id where the content will be moved to
  • new_variant - the new product page_id_variant

Note: If a Page ID Variant(s) is not being used, the column(s) must still be included to delineate those empty fields. If this is the case, simply leave these cells empty in the CSV file or include empty commas in the TXT file.

5. Choose the CSV file to upload or drag and drop it from your desktop.
6. Verify the file you've entered is correct and click Move Content.

Migration History

Regardless of which migration method you choose, you can see the status history of all moved content at the bottom of the page. You can also download the original file, as well as an error file if any errors occurred.

Migrations During an Implementation Project

If you are a PowerReviews client that is actively implementing, your Implementation Team can handle the Page ID migration as part of your review import process.

Please provide them with a CSV file similar to the above, with one column containing the current Page ID values and another column containing the applicable new Page ID values. Add extra columns for Page ID Variants as needed.

Your Technical Implementation Consultant (TIC) will run the migration file and will let you know of any errors or Page IDs that were not able to be migrated due to incorrect data provided.
