GTIN-13 Usage for Consumer Units in the US via GDSN

Emma
New Contributor

Hello,

We are preparing to list products in the US market via GDSN, and we would like to ensure that it is possible to transmit GTIN-13 codes (EAN-13 format) for consumer units level, rather than GTIN-12 (UPC-A).

Our GTINs are based on a UK GS1 company prefix and are currently structured in 13-digit format.
Before onboarding any items, we want to ensure that this is supported and acceptable for trading partners in the US.

Can GTIN-13 be transmitted and used for the US market, or is GTIN-12 strictly required ?

Thank you in advance to the community for your help!

Hello @Emma Emma, thank you for reaching out to our customer community. Welcome back.

Yes, US companies can use EAN barcodes. While UPCs are primarily used in North America, EANs are the standard in Europe and are also globally recognized. Both EAN and UPC barcodes are based on GS1 standards, ensuring worldwide interoperability. This means that a product with an EAN barcode can be scanned at a retail point of sale anywhere in the world, including the US.

While most retailers globally accept EAN barcodes, it's important to check with specific retailers or trading partners to ensure they can handle the specific EAN-13 barcode. Some smaller or specialty stores in the US and Canada might require UPC barcodes.

Please let us know if there is anything else we may assist with for this request and we would be delighted to. Thank you and have a wonderful day!
